I am constantly trying to make up new recipes or even old ones with a twist to them. I love to try to create something new and unusual, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. With summer here and scorching hot there is just no way I am turning on the oven, so I decided to grill. I have never made a barbecue sauce before but decided now was a good time since that tastes awesome on the grill. I checked out a few recipes online to get an idea of what are the main ingredients for barbecue sauce and off to Smart and Final (#sfsmarties) I went.

With a 4 year old in tow going to any grocery store usually ends up with a few extra things in the cart:

Who can say no to this face?

I will have to admit watermelon is not a bad thing for a child to beg for.

After getting one or two things for him I went on and got chicken for the barbecue sauce. Smart and Final will have First Street boneless skinless breast, fresh on sale from June 27th to July 3rd so it is a good time to get the chicken for this recipe.

Love the fact there is no Artificial ingredients!

I also scored an awesome deal on worcestershire sauce:

with a son begging to leave and making crazy faces at me out of boredom it was time to leave:

So I finished up with getting everything for my recipe:

and go home to create this dish.

Without further ado here is the recipe for Grilled Chicken with Blueberry Barbecue Sauce

Ingredients:

1 Cup Ketchup

2 1/2 Tbsp Mustard

3 Tbsp Worcestershire Sause

2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar (you can also use apple cider or red wine vinegar also depending on your taste)

1 Tbsp Lemon Juice

3 Tbsp Brown Sugar

1 Tbsp Black pepper

(above ingredients are a base you can use for any Barbecue or just leave it and use as is)

Extra ingredients I used:

2 cups Blueberries

1 TBSP Molasses

1 to 2 Tbsp Honey

Garlic powder (to taste)

1/2 Tsp Mustard powder

Really the beauty of these sauce you can add more or less of any of the ingredients above. I am not a spicy gal but if you want add red pepper flakes)

2 to 3lb of chicken

As many chopped veggies you like to grill

Directions:

This is A VERY difficult first step so pay close attention ;)

1: Add all ingredients:

2: Once all the ingredients are mixed together simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes. I crushed the blueberries with the back of my spoon while it simmered.

3: Put in a food processor (or blender) and blend until smooth:

4: Marinade the chicken in the sauce for as long as you would like. I usually do for a half hour but you can easily let it sit over night

5: Chop the veggies:

6: Put on the skews:

7: Put them on the grill (FYI put tomatoes in the middle they fall off when on the end). Grill for 15 minutes medium heat turn half way through.

8: Enjoy:

  7. Waterwoman says:

It is a great sounding recipe….I would make certain adjustments to make it diabetic friendly, but that wouldn’t be hard.

I suggest you soak the “sticks” in water for 1/2 hour so they don’t burn.

  8. Waterwoman says:

A good idea to soak the sticks in water for 1/2 hr before using, eliminates burning wood:)

Nice recipe, will make adjustments so it is diabetic friendly, but sounds good!

  9. Looks super yummy! I have never tried to do kabobs before. Looks like a project for next week :)

  12. I made this bbq sauce twice I eliminated the amount of pepper on the second batch, beause it was too much for my taste.. But it was delicious thanks for the recipe. I was wondering about the peach bbq sauce how many peaches did you use?

    • Michelle says:

I didn’t use peaches in this recipe. I have seen others use peaches but I am not sure how many. I decided against peach bbq because of how much work it was.
